US Open, end of week one...

Who has impressed and who has been a little bit...underwhelming? Here is the succinct John Hovis view...

Outstanding - Andy Roddick. Since announcing his retirement, he has turned the timepiece back. Roddick in his pomp, massive serve, jittery movement, sharp forehand, cracking shotmaking. Although not the best on display this week, the massive jump in his level is worth the award. Hovis likes the A-Rod.

Excellent - Fed (no surprise; unimpeachable on serve), Djoker (seems to be stepping up, although not aggressive enough), Stan Wawrinka (Fabulous demolition of the Dog on Sunday).

Very good and improving - The Missile (Terrible in his first round match and lucky to win. With a big red face and a lack of urgency, his twetny-feet-behind-the-baseline-approach was awful. The serve wasn't working and he looked lost on the hardcourt, crazy when you consider what his game SHOULD look like considering his assets and physique. Yet, his astonishing hammering of James Blake was like watching a different player. He served incredibly, almost unbeatably. His return was driving, the movement and defending were excellent. the forehand was working and he steamrollered Blake (who had been playing well) in front of a highly partisan crowd. Watch out Muzzard.

Ordinary - Murray. If he'd been playing anyone else except Lopez, his wee pet bunny, Murray would be going home. Looks tired, he's started feeling imaginary injuries, talking sarcastically to himself and his corner...yet, one can't but feel this will soon dissipate. Although tired after the crazy heat, it must be remember that Murray really is super fit. He'll shake off the tiredness quickly. Can Raonic really step up?

Women - only Serena, Sam Stosur and Laura Robson have raised the level above ordinary. Sharapovanova has been clinical. Not much else to report. Enjoy watching my wee lovely Bartoli, however she has been slightly underwhelming this week.

Worst gear - Mardy Fish. Who designed the K-Swiss gear for Mardy? It looks like a dyslexic football strip. In fact, the gear has been terrible throughout. Some of the colour schemes are horrendous, slashing pink tiger stripes, dayglo abominations. Lopez, Hewitt, Robson...all your gear reeks. Milos Raonic's Lacoste top v Blake was simply an abomination. His polo shirt looked like a gay ice lolly.
